Thinking of going for Wireless?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a wireless fire alarm system, let us explain.

Like with any advancement in technology, Wireless fire alarm systems have had an arduous journey and have come a long way. In fact, wireless fire alarms have been around since the eighties and for those old enough who were involved in the supply and installation of wireless systems will recall that they were not very reliable due to limited radio technology and the quality of batteries available at that time.

Fast forward to today, and due to vast improvements in mobile phone radio technology and batteries, wireless systems are very reliable and now becoming popular. Furthermore, there is now a radio section of the British Standards fire alarm design code BS5839 and European Standards for fire alarm EN54-25.
However, with so many benefits of a wire-free installation, is this the best option for you?

Wireless Fire Alarm System – How do they work?

The operation of a wireless system works the same as a normal hard-wired system inasmuch that you have fire alarm control panel, smoke or heat detectors, manual call points and electronic sounders; activation of a detector or manual call point will activate the sounders. The only difference between the wireless and wired, is with a wireless system the communication between the control panel and the detection and sounders is carried out over radio waves, but with a wired system, it is via electrically conductive cables.

To decide which system is best for you will depend on the advantages and disadvantages stated above. For many, the easiest and hassle-free option for many is turning out to be the wireless.

Here are some of the Advantages and Disadvantages of a Wireless fire alarm system.

  • No unsightly cables or containment on display. Aesthetically very good installation

  • Minimal disruption to your business during the installation.

  • No additional cost for decoration on completion of the installation.

  • Minimal damage to building fabric, ideal for historical and grade listed buildings.

  • Easy to amend layout of equipment if the building changes.

  • A hybrid option is available to extend a hard-wired fire alarm with wireless equipment.

  • Ideal for a temporary system in construction sites or leisure functions.

  • Ideal solution for buildings with Asbestos issues.

  • Hardware is more expensive by approximately 25%. Some of this cost will be offset by any decoration cost required against the hard-wired system.

  • Higher Maintenance cost due to battery replacement. Detectors every 5-7 years, Sounders every 3 years.

We have been installing Wireless Fire Alarm Systems continuously since 2005

Back in 2005 Fire Systems Ltd looked at the fire alarm market and compared wired against wireless systems, we could see at that time that the advancements being made in the wireless sector due to mobile phone radio technology were rapidly improving wireless fire alarms systems. We could see the huge benefits of going wireless and made a conscious decision to focus predominately on wire-free systems.

Some 12 years leader, we are considered the later in this field. Not only have we installed systems all over the UK, but we have installed systems in Germany, Poland, Belgium and as far as Singapore. No other fire alarm company has installed wireless fire alarms as per our CV.
